PhD Project: A monitoring tool for techno-economic analysis of current and next-generation sustainable cooling technologies within Irish data centres

Eoin Oude Essink is a PhD Student at TU Dublin. He attended Trinity College Dublin, where he obtained a First-Class Honours for both his Bachelor’s and Master’s in Mechanical Engineering. During his bachelors he was also part of the Mechanical Engineering department at TU Delft and conducted a 6-month research project on autonomous vehicles with ZF in Germany.

After graduating he worked as a thermal engineer for a cryogenics company in the Netherlands. There he developed numerical tools to aid the designing phase of new products as the tools estimate the heat transfer characteristics of the product.

He has always had in interest in the field of thermodynamics, and a personal passion for technology and electronics. He combined these interests during his master’s research project. Where he conducted a numerical study on the microscale modulation of heat transfer caused by moveable parts in a liquid cooled server CPU. He conducted this research with Dr. Sajad Alimohammadi and Dr. Tim Persoons both of whom will be joining Dr. Xiangjjie Chen as supervisors for this PhD project.

Eoin’s PhD project will focus on developing the best suited cooling technologies for Irish Data Centre’s. The research proposes to make use of both physical experiments and numerical studies to determine effective cooling solutions, as well as collaboration between existing state-of-the-art collocation data centres based in Ireland.
