Simon has a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering and prior to beginning his PhD has worked as a graduate civil engineer. During this time, he gained experience in flood risk and SuDS design, green building and climate modelling. During his time as a PhD student, he has acted as PGTA for numerous modules within BSEER including delivering building modelling and simulation lectures and tutorials, undertaken a role as Evaluation Exchange Coordinator in collaboration with UCL East and Trellis, and delivered successful careers events for students as the ERBE careers representative. He has won Best Student Poster awards at national and international research conferences.
Combining building dynamic simulation with multi-criteria decision- making methods for a participatory design framework for net-zero carbon buildings

The PhD project proposes a mixed-methods design framework for net-zero carbon building design. It aims to develop and test this framework by structuring the design activities using the Double Diamond Method and applying the framework to early-stage building construction projects located in distinct climatic zones (Cfb and Aw) with diverse stakeholder groups. Consultation surveys and participatory workshop exercises will be used to explore stakeholder motivations, aspirations and values in the design process, whilst building modelling and simulation techniques will provide estimated baseline case study building performance across carbon and environmental metrics under current and future climatic conditions.

Wider contextual social and economic contextual factors are also considered through the stakeholder-engaged approach to design and incorporation of Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis Methods. Participatory design workshops will combine stakeholder generated knowledge and values with building performance modelling and simulation outcomes to produce value-aligned performance improvements. The project aims to deliver a design framework applicable and useful for industry, so to assist design teams in effectively designing for performance and stakeholder values whilst ensuring effective stakeholder engagement is achieved throughout.
